So it isn't very clear if these statistics are completely true...
But what if they were?Should we be more concerned about the crimes committed by white people instead of stereotyping other people groups?
How does this video affect your view on the different ethnic groups in America?
I believe that at the very least we should be just as concerned about the crimes committed by white people. I believe this video made a good point. Often the crimes of white people are overlooked while the crimes of black people are all over the news every single day. It is important to realize that all groups of people are involved in crime regardless of their race and class. This video made me realize just how much stereotyping occurs in our country.
ReplyDeleteBeing military I knew families from all races and ethnicities, and even socioeconomic backgrounds. I don't usually base my opinion on statistics or news media because most of the time they are biased nowadays, so it does not really affect my view. However, I do agree that not necessarily white, but wealthy get away with much more than do those in poverty. But unfortunately the wealthy run the country so I highly doubt that viewpoint will change soon.
ReplyDeleteWhether these statistics are true or not, it made me think about how much stereotyping occurs on a daily basis. As a country, one of the best things we could do would be work to move away from these stereotypes. To show just how rooted these stereotypes are in American culture, I feel that even this video, which is attempting to dispel stereotypes, displayed some itself. When it compared the price statistics for white-collar crime to crime committed by the poor, it seemed to imply that the white-collar crimes are committed by the white majority, while minorities are responsible for the crimes of the poor. I know the video brought up this statistic to prove a point about how we view crime, but something about that bothered me. As a country, we need to stop classifying certain crimes as being predominantly committed by certain ethnic groups. Just as whites are certainly responsible for many of the crimes of the poor, ethnic minorities are certainly responsible for some amount, no matter how small, of white-collar crime. Therefore, instead of arguing that the white-collar crimes of the white actually result in a loss of more money, we need to stop linking ethnic groups to classes of crime.
